If you’re planning your wedding and thinking about photography, one of the most common things couples tell me is: “We’re awkward in photos.”

Honestly? Perfect.

Because almost every couple I work with says exactly the same thing.

And the good news is — natural wedding photos don’t come from knowing how to pose.

They come from feeling relaxed and actually enjoying your day.

I’m a wedding photographer based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, and I focus on natural, documentary-style photography — which basically means real moments over forced posing.

Here are a few simple ways to help your photos feel natural (and not awkward):

  1. Choose a Photographer Whose Style Feels Right. This is the biggest one. If you’re drawn to real laughter, emotion, and slightly imperfect but meaningful moments — look for someone whose work already reflects that. If everything you see feels heavily posed, chances are your photos will feel that way too. Your photographer’s approach shapes your entire experience.
  2. Give Yourself Breathing Space. Wedding mornings have a habit of running late (it just happens 😄). Giving yourself a bit of extra time means you’re not rushing from one thing to the next — and that alone makes a huge difference to how relaxed you feel. It also creates space for those in-between moments — chatting, laughing, hugging people — which often end up being the most meaningful photos.
  3. Focus on Your People, Not the Camera. Some of the best photos happen when you completely forget the camera is there. Talking to your friends, hugging family, laughing at something random — that’s where the magic is. The less you think about being photographed, the more natural everything feels.
  4. Take a Few Minutes Just for You. Weddings are busy. Like… really busy. Taking 10–15 minutes to step away together can be a game changer. A short walk, a quiet chat, or just a breather gives you a chance to slow down — and often leads to some of the most relaxed, genuine photos of the day.
  5. Trust Your Photographer (and Don’t Worry About “Posing”). You don’t need to know what to do. I’ll guide you when needed — usually something simple like walking, chatting, or just being together — but nothing that feels forced or unnatural. No complicated posing. No “stand here and tilt your head like this” 😄
  6. Forget About Being “Perfect”. The best wedding photos aren’t perfect. They’re the laugh you didn’t expect, the slightly chaotic moments, the hugs, the happy tears. That’s what you’ll actually care about when you look back.

Your wedding isn’t about getting everything “just right” for the camera.

It’s about the people, the moments, and how the day actually feels.

That’s what I focus on capturing — so when you look back, it feels real.
