Short answer — no, you don’t need one.
But it can be one of the most valuable things you do before your wedding day, especially if you’re feeling unsure about being in front of the camera.
Most couples I work with tell me the same thing at the start:
“We’re awkward in photos.”
And that’s completely normal.
An engagement session is a chance to experience what it actually feels like to be photographed — without the pressure of a wedding day timeline, guests watching, or everything happening at once.
It gives you space to relax into it.
- Get comfortable. You get a feel for how I work and what it’s like to be guided in a natural, relaxed way. Nothing forced, nothing overly posed — just gentle direction and real moments.
- Build confidence. Very quickly, most couples realise they don’t need to “perform” or know what to do. You just need to be yourselves, and everything starts to feel much more natural.
- Get to know your photographer. By the time your wedding comes around, I’m not a stranger with a camera anymore. That familiarity makes a huge difference to how relaxed you feel on the day.
- Create beautiful images. Of course, you also get a set of images that reflect you as a couple — without the time pressure of a wedding.
But the biggest benefit isn’t just the photos.
It’s how much more relaxed and confident you feel on your wedding day.
That’s why I include engagement sessions with full-day bookings — particularly for couples who feel a bit unsure about being photographed.
Because when you feel comfortable, everything else just falls into place 🤍
