One of the most common questions I get before an engagement shoot is: “What on earth should we wear?”
The good news? There’s no strict rulebook. The best outfits are the ones that feel like you - comfortable, confident, and effortless. Your engagement session isn’t about fashion trends; it’s about connection, movement, and real moments. What you wear should support that, not steal the spotlight.
Start With This (No Matter the Season)
Before we talk weather, here are a few golden guidelines:
- Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a colour palette you both love and build around it.
- Avoid loud logos and heavy patterns. They date quickly and distract from emotion.
- Wear something you can move in. Walking, cuddling, sitting, spinning - it all happens.
- Layers are your friend. They add depth, texture, and options during the shoot.
Now, let’s break it down by season.
Engagement Sessions in Warmer Weather ☀️
For spring and summer sessions, lighter fabrics and breathable layers work beautifully - especially outdoors.
Think: linen shirts, flowy dresses, soft cottons, relaxed tailoring.
Neutral tones, earthy shades, pastels, or muted colours photograph incredibly well and complement natural light.
Dresses with movement (maxi or midi styles) look stunning when walking or catching the breeze. For suits or shirts, rolled sleeves and open collars keep things relaxed and natural.
Shoes matter more than you think - choose something comfortable and location-appropriate. Barefoot on grass, trainers for city walks, or boots for countryside locations all work when they feel intentional.
Engagement Sessions in Colder Weather ❄️
Autumn and winter sessions are seriously underrated - cosy, romantic, and full of atmosphere.
Layers shine here: knit jumpers, coats, scarves, textured fabrics like wool or tweed. Rich tones such as deep greens, browns, rusts, creams, and charcoal work beautifully with darker, contrasty edits.
Don’t worry about staying warm - you’ll be moving plenty, and layers can always come on and off. Gloves, hats, and wraps can add personality without overpowering the look.
Final Thought
Wear something that feels like you on your best day. If you’re comfortable, you’ll relax. If you relax, the moments flow. And that’s where the magic lives.
If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help you choose - because great photos start long before the camera comes out.
